PV Firefighter Safety Switch for Photovoltaic Systems

Technical solution for safe DC string disconnection, emergency PV shutdown and firefighter safety in commercial and industrial solar installations.

QFire PV firefighter safety switch with integrated surge protection, galvanic DC string isolation and industrial steel enclosure for commercial photovoltaic systems

Photovoltaic systems can generate DC voltages of up to 1,500 V. Even when the inverter is switched off, the DC string cables may remain live.

In emergency situations, this can:

A firefighter safety switch enables galvanic disconnection of the PV strings directly at the building entry point or close to the roof entry.

How Does a PV Firefighter Safety Switch Work?

A firefighter safety switch disconnects the PV strings automatically or manually from the inverter by galvanic isolation in emergency situations. Typical system components include:

[1] Switching units installed close to the roof entry point
[2] Control unit located near the inverter
[3] Optional external emergency stop and connection to a fire alarm system

Optional components include:
■ Integration with a fire alarm system
■ Integrated surge protection
■ Integrated fuses in the positive and/or negative poles
■ Cluster control for multiple roof areas

In the event of shutdown, all PV strings are galvanically isolated so that the cables between the firefighter safety switch and the inverter become de-energised.

Reliable Triggering: Emergency Shutdown Mechanisms for PV Firefighter Safety Switches

Multiple triggering methods ensure reliable shutdown in emergency situations — manually, automatically or via external control signals.

The QFire firefighter safety switch can be triggered in several different ways. In addition to manual shutdown via the control unit or external emergency stop buttons, the system also responds automatically to defined fault conditions.

In the event of grid failure or undervoltage, the relays automatically open and galvanically disconnect the connected PV strings from the inverter. This ensures that the safety function remains active even if the supply voltage fails.
The system also detects cable breakage or voltage drops within the control circuit and automatically initiates a safe shutdown.
